Born Like This

Pine Ridge, South Dakota

“Born Like This” is a timely collection of insights from youth, adults and elders from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation’s Two Spirit community.

“Two-Spirit” is an Indigenous term, primarily used by Native American and First Nations people, that describes individuals who embody both masculine and feminine spirits, often holding unique spiritual or gender roles within their communities.  It is a cross section of Lakota two spirit voices during a historic moment in their community. In July 2019, the Oglala Sioux tribal council passed historic marriage and anti-hate crime legislation. The language from this initial legislation was inspired by two new State bills to address much needed changes to the anti-hate crime language and protections in the state of South Dakota. (2021)
SB 166 and SB 190 are inclusive hate crime and protection bills being voted upon in South Dakota this Legislative Session.
