Cause Campaign:

In 2019, a powerful bomb cyclone ravaged Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. With millions of dollars in damages, the Oglala Lakota Nation took the unprecedented step to apply for federal FEMA funding as a sovereign nation. Over the course of 3 months, the tribal council and a small team of dedicated individuals from the Lakota People’s Law project organized, educated and lobbied FEMA for disaster funding for the people of Pine Ridge. As a small team of media creators and advocates, our goal was to create content that could reach a much broader audience and to educate them about the disaster and the communities vision to rebuild. The video garnered over a quarter million views online and helped support the tribes efforts to circulate petitions and personal pleas for disaster relief funding for the people of Pine Ridge. In June 2019, FEMA funding was awarded to the sovereign nation of Pine Ridge and they now have the infrastructure, expertise and know how to do so in the future.
